Spiral Toolpaths for High-Speed Machining of 2D Pockets with or without Islands

چکیده

We describe new methods for the construction of spiral toolpaths for high-speed machining. In the simplest case, our method takes a polygon as input and a number δ > 0 and returns a spiral starting at a central point in the polygon, going around towards the boundary while morphing to the shape of the polygon. The spiral consists of linear segments and circular arcs, it is G continuous, it has no self-intersections, and the distance from each point on the spiral to each of the neighboring revolutions is at most δ. Our method has the advantage over previously described methods that it is easily adjustable to the case where there is an island in the polygon to be avoided by the spiral. In that case, the spiral starts at the island and morphs the island to the outer boundary of the polygon. It is shown how to apply that method to make significantly shorter spirals in polygons with no islands than what is obtained by conventional spiral toolpaths. Finally, we show how to make a spiral in a polygon with multiple islands by connecting the islands into one island.

A Smooth Spiral-like Tool Path with Controlled Cutting Width for Pocket Machining

We present an algorithm for generating G 1-continuous spiral-like tool paths for machining pockets without islands. The pocket may be an arbitrary simply-connected 2D shape bounded by straight-line segments and circular arcs. Based on the Voronoi diagram of the pocket we generate a sequence of nested Jordan curves (“wave fronts”) inside the pocket that are linked to form a spiral-like tool path...

Toward 5-axis High Speed Machining

We present a scheme to construct C1 continuous toolpath for 5-axis pocketing of high speed machining. A continuous toolpath synthesis is proposed, that forms out circular segments of maximally inscribed sizes and linear segments connecting these circular segments. Extending earlier work that employed the Medial Axis Transform to compute these maximally inscribed circles for 2D planar pockets, t...

Machining of complex-shaped parts with guidance curves

Nowadays, High Speed Machining (HSM) is usually used for production of hardened material parts with complex shapes such as dies and moulds. In such parts, toolpaths generated for bottom machining feature with the conventional parallel plane strategy induced many feed rate reductions especially when boundaries of the feature have a lot of curvatures and are not parallel. Several machining experi...

Energy Efficiency Analyses of Toolpaths in a Pocket Milling Process

This paper presents an approach to analytically determine the most energy efficient toolpath strategy in mechanical machining. This was achieved by evaluating the electrical energy requirement of the NC codes generated for the zag, zigzag, and rectangular contour toolpath strategies. The analytical method was validated by performing pocket milling on AISI 1018 steel with the considered toolpath...
